Day 10: Pick out a new Christmas Book
Today we went to Borders and picked out 2 new Christmas books. I love the idea of reading a different Christmas book every night in December leading up to Christmas, but I don't have enough books yet.
We got Snowmen at Christmas by Caralyn Buehner and Christmas in the Manger by Nola Buck.

Yay for Christmas books! We discovered J.R. Tolkien's "Letters from Father Christmas" a few years ago. It is a gem. ;-) It is also kinda expensive because it is out of print.

Jeff's mom gives everyone a new Christmas book each year which is so fun. I love the grinch of course. This is for older kids, but when I grew up we would sit down and read "The Best Christmas Pageant ever" in one sitting. It's not terribly long but it would take an hour or so. But we would laugh ourselves silly every time. If you haven't read it, you have to. It's a really sweet book.
We like The Christmas Humbugs by Colleen and Michael Monroe.
You know I have a pile of "favorites"...or at least suspected.

Those are MY favorites. My oldest LOVES The Christmas Deer. It's long and there's lots of animals and tracks.

In our home we have a book with stories in it that we read each day in December. Then we sing a song. The kids suffer through the stories at this point to get to the song so they can dance. One day they'll love the stories as I do....just wait!
Hooray! Reading a Christmas book every night is one of our traditions. I wrap them up about Thanksgiving so Talmage gets to open a "present" every night as we approach Christmas. I also keep them packed away throughout the year so that Tal forgets we have them.
Favorites?
Jan Brett is, of course, classic. I'd recommend any of hers, though The Mitten is a Classic with a capital C. Polar Express. My very favorite might be Red Ranger Came Calling by Berkeley Breathed. I count winter books, too, and I like All You Need For a Snowman by Alice Schertle.
For a little older kids (maybe next year) and classic faith promoting (read cheesy) Christmas stories I like Pearl S. Buck's Christmas Day in the Morning, illustrated by Mark Buehner and The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey by Susan Wojciechowski.
I'll have to get back to you after we open more books.
Oh! Merry Christmas Big Hungry Bear, because how can you not love Don and Audrey Wood?
